Insurance for Individuals & Families

October 5, 2015

Insurance for individuals and families represents an important and growing market, especially with the advent of healthcare reform (ACA or PPACA).  Prior January 1, 2014, many individual and family health plans were subject to medical underwriting which could result in either the policy being rated up to a higher premium or even declined, depending on pre-existing health conditions.

As of January 1, 2014, individual and family plans are now guaranteed issue, meaning the policy can no longer be declined.  Eligible individuals can enroll in a guaranteed issue health plan during the annual open enrollment period or outside of this period if a qualifying event occurs.

Individual health plans are offered by insurance companies both inside and outside of state exchanges.  The same plans offered inside the exchange are typically offered outside the exchange at the exact same price directly from the insurance company.  The household income of some individuals will provide incentive to enroll in an exchange plan where they receive help paying or fully paying for their health plan.  Additionally, some individuals will also qualify for an enhanced benefit plan (i.e. lower deductible, copayments and out of pocket maximum).

Benefit Team is presently licensed and certified to sell individual plans both in and outside the exchange in California (Covered California) and Washington (Washington Healthplanfinder).  Benefit Team will help you get the information you need to make the most informed and best decision for you.  We'll help you research cost, plan benefits, providers and assist with the online enrollment process.*
